At Home Summer Carnival with Fresh Beignets

Hello lovelies! My apologies for being completely MIA for weeks, but finals are over and life is getting a little  warmer and sweeter. My last final was today, but last night to relax before my psychology exam, I made beignets with my boyfriend. There’s something so surreal about this time of year when the streets are lined with confetti and cotton candy machines, and these French donuts elicit the exact same Americana street-fair summer day feeling. Ingredients 1 1/2 cups lukewarm water 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1 envelope active dry yeast 2 eggs, slightly beaten 1 1/4 teaspoons salt 1 cup evaporated milk 7 cups bread flour 1/4 cup shortening Nonstick spray Oil, for deep-frying 3 cups confectioners’ sugar 1) Mix water, sugar, and yeast in a large bowl and let sit for 10 minutes. 2) In another bowl, beat the eggs, salt and evaporated milk together. Mix egg mixture to the yeast mixture. In a separate bowl, measure out the bread flour. Add 3 cups of the flour to the yeast mixture and stir …

Cabana Cool: Ice-Whites for Spring and Summer

Hello my darlings! I am posting from the endless summer that is Guanacaste, Costa Rica. I have been living in feather-light linens, sweet pastels, and ocean-kissed curled locks. Makeup inspired by that one Marilyn Monroe beach photoshoot (cue green sweaters and too-pink lips), and American Apparel Cali Sun & Fun one piece inspired by the strong Costaricense sun not agreeing with my Polish complexion (burns on burns). Layering ruffled whites and creams creates a luxe yet airy way to frolic in the sun. Silly costume sunglass pieces (mine $3 from 1960’s Sur de France) bring life to too-perfect ice whites. Hasta luego, beauties! xo, Julia

My Funny Galentine: Party Decor

Hi everyone! I am so, so excited to celebrate all of my female friendships this Friday with Rom-coms, Russel Strover’s, and Champagne cupcakes (recipe to come!). I am also super excited for Saturday to celebrate Valentine’s with my boyfriend by swing dancing at Barbetta! To prepare for Friday, I’ve started to craft little Valentine’s with glitter glue and write nice things about each person on the back of them. I’ve also gone to Party City and spent a total of $6 on cute heart garlands and other heart decorations! If you are having a brunch or cocktail party for your Galentine’s, I recommend decorating in the most luxe way as possible. Visions of overflowing sweets, pastries, and candies evoke feelings of the most beautiful decadence (Think that “I Want Candy” Scene of Marie Antoinette). Lit scented candles, fresh flowers, and extra plush throws and pillows add to the luxury vibe. Think of Valentine’s Day as a time to celebrate all the loves in your life; filial, self-love, and friendship. Send flowers to your mother, treat yourself …

Pink Christmasses

This Christmas, I propose: sparkling cider poured over cotton candy and jewel-toned stockings beyond emerald and ruby. While I can listen to Sufjan Stevens’ “Silver and Gold” album endlessly and endlessly, it is time for a few little changes. My Christmas sweater this year is an “Urban Renewal” piece reconstructed from the 80’s, filled with beads on beads of bright pink and Christmas cheer. Pink ribbons on presents and pastel frosted gingerbread bring a sweet, old cottage charm to the holidays. xo, Julia
